It’s not everyday that we see a car return for more stereo installation only a few weeks after some work was already completed, but this was one of them.
Having already installed the Alpine head unit and autochanger a couple of weeks before, the customer decided that the improved quality of the head unit should be matched by the speakers, and that a subwoofer to enhance the predominantly r and b music preference was becoming more or a necessity, so this would be incorporated too.
The brief was for a simple and clean installation that still allowed room for packing in the boot, but that was also durable as well.
We began by stripping much of the interior out to allow access for the large amount of cabling that was to be installed. The system incorporates a 5 channel Boston amplifier, and for best sound quality all new cabling from the amp in the boot was run to (and through) the doors to the speakers, to ensure a consistent signal path. During this time we were joined by “clover” the stuffed dog, which had accidentally been left in the car by one of the customer’s daughters, and who overlooked much of the installation J
The front components were mounted on solid MDF baffles to allow clearance for the large magnet, and to give the speakers a solid base to work from, and a moderate level of sound deadening was applied to the inside door skins to reduce resonance and improve quality. The rears were mounted on a smaller MDF baffle, also with a small amount of sound deadening and these co-axials are used as rear fill.
A definite consideration was practicality as well as neatness with the installation, so the boot floor is constructed in two pieces, comprising the rear section; which remains in situe for the life of the installation, but can be removed using two concealed screws countersunk into the floor should servicing be required, fixing into standard Subaru mounting points, and the front section; which sits on custom brackets, and fixes down using 3 screws to make sure the panel remain tightly and securely fixed at all times. A colour co-ordinated screwdriver was also fitted under the rear slam panel to make sure the tools for removal are always there.
The sub box is securely fastened to the screwed down rear section for safety and security.
The boot was finished in a high quality black carpet, for durability and to integrate with the standard Subaru panels.
