The
brief for this installation was to complete a build that was both lightweight
and in keeping with the individual style of the car. The build incorporated full
boot and rear compartment installation, including front and rear door cards, as
well as integration with the Audi TT dashboard that was fitted at aprox. the same
time.
We decided to keep the rear compartment and boot clear of distraction, incorporating
a removable light grey panel, that not only served as access for the battery located
in the spare wheel well, but that would also lead the eye through the car from
the rear towards the dash ( which at the time was most likely the first TT dash
conversion for a MK 1). For this reason the rear internal skins below the rear
windows were modified slightly to allow the two kenwood amps to tuck in flush
with the side panels, using space otherwise wasted, and keeping the rear compartment
neat and simple.
The style of the car at the time ( which subsequently changed slightly by the
change of wheel styles after the installation ) was one of retro modern racer.
The car retained the clean period ( 70’s ) style of the original donor golf,
but was modernised by the dashboard and other interior details. The racer element,
part of which was the heavily reworked supercharged Polo engine, was elaborated
on by the racing harnesses and strut brace, and handbrake.
We designed and built the doorcards from thin MDF sheets, cut into a shape to
emulate the natural structural design of interior metal skin panels, to give the
impression that they had evolved to that shape through structural analysis. These
were backed in areas with carbon sheeting, to highlight the racer style that carbon
evokes.
The shape of the subbox and side panels at the back were arrived upon in part
to help conceal the fuel filler system that had been relocated to the rear panel
below the boot. Panels are removable for access to the pipework should a problem
arise.
Black leather and suede was chosen as this combination in this style lends well
to a retro feel for the interior, and we wanted to keep it as monochromatic as
possible to keep the style and contrasts simple.
Chrome trim completes the detailing, linking with the chrome on the outside of
the car, and the silver dash details, and was chosen to compliment the suede and
leather marterial to give it an old “fender amp” art deco style. click
